Every Tuesday, a few of us truck out to Team Trivia: https://www.teamtrivia.com/. It is a write in your question game played over 2 halves with 3 rounds each + a halftime and final question. In each round of 3 questions, you get to assign how many points each question is worth: 5/3/1 points in 1st half and then 6/4/2 points in 2nd half. Halftime is usually 4 questions worth 2 each and final is a question or questions worth a variable of up to 15 points (like final Jeop). Our local place gives out $50 for 1st and $25 for 2nd.

Last night the final category was TV and pop culture .... ever our nemesis in trivia. Jennifer, Hilaire and I crashed on the final to lose out on $50, and a chance to make progress on this goal. Although we had a good night answering some tough ones, in the end, it comes down to the final -- which had been good to us the past 3 weeks -- but 'TV Timelines' is never cause for celebration! I will post questions each week here. For this week's game, questions below:

1st Half:

TV - What 1980's TV show featured characters such as the Captain, the bartender, the doctor and the cruise director? A: The Love Boat (correct)

US History - In 1949, President Truman laid the cornerstone for a building in NYC that would become home to this organization? A: United Nations (correct)

Gambling - In what gambling game can you play the 'don't pass line'? A: Craps (correct - having just come back from Vegas where Jennifer played a lot of bubble craps)

Concerts - This alternative band from Omaha NE, has played a large concert nearly every year since the 90's on March 11? A: 311 (correct - able to reason it out from the date)

Comediennes - What American stand-up comedienne had a concert film produced about her entitled the Notorious C.H.O.? A: Elaine Cho (wrong. Correct - Margaret Cho. Couldn't remember 1st name. Think I grabbed the former labor sec?)

Fashion - What Hall of Fame sports figure has a cologne named '23'. A: Jordan (correct).

TV Plots - What TV show ran on Showtime for 2 seasons starring Mandy Patinkin and Ellen Muth as grim reapers working in Seattle? A: The Harvesters (wrong. Correct - Dead Like Me. Did I mention we are not strong in pop culture?)

Food - What was the name of the sloppy joe sauce Heinz introduced back in 1969? A: Manwich (correct).

Crime - One step beyond trespassing, what is the name of the crime wherein you are on someone's land to either hunt or steal game? A: Poaching (correct).

Halftime

Theme: Movie Tag Lines

Name the 1990's movies with the following taglines:

  1. "In a world of 0s and 1s, are you a 0 or the 1?" A: Matrix (correct)

  2. "Never let your guard down, never fall in love" A: The Bodyguard (correct)

  3. "You will laugh, you will cry, you will hurl" A: Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure (wrong. Correct - Wayne's World).

  4. "A movie 65 million years in the making" A: Jurassic Park (correct).

So, we had dropped a total of 4 points in the 1st round -- 2 1-point questions and one 2-pointer at half time. We were trailing by 3 at half.

2nd Round:

Economics - When the EU asked its member countries to put in additional sources of revenue for it annual report, what country added revenues from smuggling, prostitution and illegal drug sales? A: Italy (correct. This one question is always a gimme on the website, which one must look up before the game since phones are prohibited from use during game).

19th C Literature - In Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, which character was the first to sing 'Yo Ho Ho, and a Bottle of Rum?'. Multiple choice: a) Billy Bones b) Blind Pew c) Long John Silver d) Jim Hawkins. A: a) Billy Bones (correct).

World Geography - Nicaragua's longest border is with which country to the north? A: Honduras (correct).

Science - What element on the periodic table gets its name from the greek word meaning 'yellow-green'? A: Chlorine (correct).

Events - The annual show called SXSW takes place in Austin TX and is, in part, about music and interactive media. What does SXSW stand for? A: Sound Effects Southwest. (wrong. Correct - South by Southwest).

US Geography - How many US States touch both the Mississippi river AND a Great Lake? A: 3 (correct).

Insurance - In 1968, the federal government launched an insurance program called NFIP in order to help protect against what natural disaster? A: Flood (correct).

Opera - What opera by Puccini takes place in Japan and was the basis for the musical Miss Saigon? A: Madam Butterfly (correct).

At the end of the 2nd round, we had 65 total points only one behind the leader of 66 points. We only dropped the SXSW question.

Final

TV Timelines. Match the TV shows from the 1st list with the TV shows of the 2nd list where the 1st episodes happened in the same year.

List 1:

Fresh off the boat

The Osbornes

Sons of Anarchy

Xena, warrior princess

List 2:

Dr. Phil

Real Housewives Atlanta

Start Trek Voyager

Unbreakable Kimmie Schmitt

We got most of them right but transposed Dr. Phil with ST Voyager. So, we guessed: Xena/Dr Phil, The Osbornes/ST Voyager, Sons/Real, Boat/Kimmie. It was actually Xena/ST, Osbornes/Dr Phil. We bet 10 to cover 3rd place getting it right, which they did. We finished 3rd. Next week!!
